From Mr Rathbone I was given the following information:

Besides visiting beaches in our parish they have other duties and places to visit.

· There are only 2 dog Wardens for NCDC (believed to be the 4th largest district council in the country) and only one warden is full time. The other is Easter - October.

· The area they cover between them stretches from Morwenstow to Bedruthan Steps and Callington to Launceston - hence the 460 sq. miles.

· Besides beaches they visit housing estates, towns and parks where they watch for dog owners allowing their pet to foul public places.

· Unaccompanied dogs in public places are picked up as strays (seven were picked up in one August week).

· There are 6 dog free beaches between Trevone and Bude.

· Visitors are very good at reading beach notices regarding dogs.

· There is a partnership with beach Lifeguards on those beaches where dogs are not allowed.

· If requested the Dog Warden will visit certain places

Reports, requests and complaints should go first to the Environmental Health Council Offices, Trevanion Road, Wadebridge PL27 7NU or telephone (01208) 893460 where a caller can speak to the Line Manager.

Dog Wardens take their breaks when they please. Mr Rathbone admitted to watching the bowls but if he was on tea break he would be entitled to and would also be watching dogs and their owners. It must be realised they do not visit just beaches. Ed.

My item regarding dogs on the beach ruffled a few feathers.  I suddenly received this letter (copy enclosed).  I am surprised there is only one person covering 460 sq miles.  He must be working non stop 24 hours a day.

On July 14th I saw the van at 12.15pm outside a house and July 16th at 3pm the van parked in Egloshayle Road and the warden watching bowls.  No beaches in either of the places.

I don’t know the warden and have nothing against he/she but I don’t like to see my community charge being wasted.
